Pipe Packing Methods

Post by Tad on Mon Jun 09, 2014 2:43 pm

I usually use the three layer method, but today I'm going to give the German method (also known as the Frank method) a try. Has anyone had success with alternate packing techniques?

I have used the Frank method for the longest time. I find that its a great process for packing. Although when it comes to flake tobaccos I use the fold and pack method. I used to rub it out but I liked how long the smoke lasted when I just folded it since the tobacco is denser and takes longer to burn.

After a leisurely 30 minutes smoking my first bowl packed with the German method I've decided I like it. I found a few things very interesting. I was pleasantly surprised on how nice the draw was. The light was even and easily maintained. I did find that a bowl packed this way tends to burn a bit hotter than with the three layer method. What also pleased me was I noticed the dottle was much dryer and looser than usual. As a result it was easier to dig out and there was much less moisture at the bottom of the bowl that can sometimes cause a gurgle.

Ill keep working with this type of packing and keep you posted.

Cheers

I'm a big fan of the ole "cram and light" method  Laughing , but on occasion I use the three layer method.

I generally use the stuff tobacco-tamp with index finger-repaet stuffing and tamping until full-light with bic-puff furiously like a friggin chimney method for pipe smoking  bounce
